FAQ: IRL Glasses - Glasses that Block Screens
For the most up-to-date information about the status of our project, check our project updates on Kickstarter!

You mentioned you intend to block out all screen types for later iterations. Is there currently a technology that you are aware of that would allow you to do that?

We’ve spoken to leading optics engineers at Waymo, Nasa, and Snap to help us figure out how to create an advanced pair of IRL Glasses that block all screens, including OLED and smartphones. With their help, we have developed a few hypotheses about technology solutions for our ultimate pair of IRL Glasses. We hope the success of this campaign expands our community and attracts investors, allowing us to raise the capital needed to pursue R&D and explore our hypotheses.

Can you make a version of IRL Glasses that clip onto prescription glasses?

We love this idea and are filing it in our “Epic Suggestions” folder. As much as we would love to create additional variations of IRL Glasses, especially a pair of clip-on lenses for our friends who wear prescription glasses (including IRL Founder Ivan), we need to focus on doing a great job on delivering our first product. Maybe somewhere down the line though!

Can you wear IRL Glasses while driving?

The IRL Glasses should NOT be worn while driving. We are aware that there are certain car models with LCD screens embedded. So, as much as we like the idea of people rocking IRL Glasses everywhere, all the time, we strongly discourage people from wearing IRL glasses while driving for your own safety.

Can you use IRL Glasses to combat migraines, headaches, or other medical conditions?

While we do hope that IRL glasses will mitigate the effect of screens, they should NOT be used as treatment for any kind of medical condition, including migraines or chronic headaches.

How do you rationalize the $49 price tag for a pair of sunglasses that could be made DIY style for much cheaper?

Buying polarizing film, orienting it correctly and pasting it on a pair of glasses is a great way to create your own pair of screen blocking glasses (it’s how we made our first prototypes)! We love DIY projects and encourage anyone interested in making their own to totally do it!

Our prototypes helped us validate our original idea but the design was lacking, the film easily peeled off, the frames were cheap, they lacked a UV filter, and would not pass as a viable, consumer-facing product.

Working with a manufacturer to develop a high-quality pair of glasses to be produced at scale is whole different challenge and one that has come with many additional costs including but not limited to design, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, taxes, customer service, and gatherings for our amazing team of volunteers who’ve put so much blood sweat and tears into this project!

We wish our price could be lower, but unfortunately the current pricing structure is as low as we felt comfortable going so that we wouldn’t lose money as the demand scaled.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
